To escape the rainy, dreary weather of Portland, Patty and I took a break and headed south - the joys of retirement, when you want to take a break and get away, you can.
We traveled south on I-5 for several hours, then turned west along the Umpqua River to get to Highway 101 on the coast. Just south of the business section of the town of Port Orford, we stopped at Battle Rock City Park, learned about the Wreck of the Cottoneva, explored the beach flora and fauna, and learned about the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve.
Then we continued on to Gold Beach Resort in the town of Gold Beach, OR. From the balcony of our top floor room (we wanted no one above us to avoid hearing them walk around during the night), we had a nice view of the ocean as we ate our dinner.
After dinner, we headed out to the beach on the hotel's path to the dunes. It was a bit windy and cool, but still very nice time for an evening walk.
At the far edge of the dunes, we looked back at our hotel.
First we walked south to the river.
And then back north, past our hotel to as far as the high tide would allow.
A pleasant way to end the day.
