White Tank Mountains and Gateway Loop, May 7 and 8, 2017

After getting settled in our condo, we did several local hikes.  On Sunday May 7 we went west to White Tank Mountains Regional Park and hiked a pleasant seven mile loop.  We came across numerous crested saguaros.  The crests are believed to be a rare genetic anomaly and I had not seen so many so readily as on this hike on Goat Camp Trail and Mule Deer Trail.

On Monday May 8, we went east to the southern part of the McDowell Sonoran Desert Preserve to hike part of the Gateway Loop trail towards Inspiration Point.  It turned out to be hotter than we anticipated and we did not make the full distance (we did spend close to three hours covering more than five miles), especially where the last 3/4 of a mile is all uphill.  We did see a lot of barrel cacti that were still in bloom.
