After teaching class on Friday evening and Saturday morning, January 18/19, Helen and I finally left Sierra Vista and made the trek back to Phoenix. On the way, we stopped at Colossal Cave. This park is about 20 miles east of Tucson. We had previously visited Karchner Caverns State Park; the Karchner cave is still very much active with moisture and creating stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature is very cool and you have to pass through airlocks as you enter and exit the cave. By comparison, Colossal Cave is a completely dry cave, no longer making stalactites and stalagmites. There were no air locks and it was actually warm inside - some 70 degrees.
After the cave, we drove the rest of the way back to Phoenix. Helen spent Sunday and Monday with me. We went for walks with Jane and Anne McNamara, out to breakfast and such. We attended the annual meeting of our condo association where I was elected to the board of directors. And on Tuesday Jan. 22, Helen joined me for breakfast at Gertrude's, the new full service restaurant at the Desert Botanical Garden. After breakfast, Helen explored the garden while I attended our annual mandatory continuing education. To continue giving tours as a docent, all docents have to attend the annual training. And then I took Helen to the airport for her flight back to Boston.
