A week in Phoenix and our first week in Munds Park, AZ, Aug. 19 - Sep. 1, 2019

On Monday Aug. 19, we had an uneventful trip from Gila, NM, back to our condo in Phoenix.  Since the central air conditioning system was still out, we installed a portable a/c unit in the living room.  While it was only rated to cool 500 square feet, it did a most acceptable job of making us comfortable.

Tuesday, Howard Air Company employees came and spent the day removing and replacing our central air system.  The unit from the roof top really showed its age - our condos were built in 1997 and those roof top units have been exposed to the sun and weather for 22 years.  I am surprised it lasted as long as it did.  As it turns out, ours is one of three units that were replaced in August and we saw at least one other condo using a portable a/c unit similar to ours in the photo above.

The new central air kept us cool and comfortable Tuesday evening and Wednesday - but then it died Thursday morning.  The installer told me that he installed a kill switch because he worried about the existing drain to which he connected the new system.  The drain clogged and the system shut down.  A Howard Air technician came and used compressed nitrogen to unclog the drain, and we were cool until we left on Monday the 26th.

The new system has an internet accessible digital thermostat.  As I write this post, I can see that the outside temp in Phoenix is 106 degrees, the inside temp is 82 degrees and the system is off.  When we return, I can turn the system on before we get there and the condo will be comfortably cool we arrive.

I got the car serviced Wednesday, we had dinner with Anne and Shawn Thursday, got shots and blood work for the dog Thursday, Patty and I got a variety of shots Friday, and Saturday evening I did a shift at the Desert Botanical Garden's Flashlight Tours.

Monday afternoon, the 26th, we drove to our rental in Munds Park, AZ.  The house is a very comfortable two bedroom, two bathroom home with a portable air conditioner in the kitchen, living room, dining room area.  It is more than adequate to keep us comfortable for the few hours on the few days where it is hot in the afternoon.  There is a back porch with gas grill and front porch with seating for six.

There are steps from the driveway up to the front porch, so we have put the dog's ramp there to make it easier to get up and down.  This is the ramp we use to get the dog into and out of the back of our SUV.

We have seen many beautiful sunsets from the street in front of the rental.

Thursday the 28th, before shopping, we had a picnic lunch at Bushmaster Park in Flagstaff.

Friday the 30th, we went into Flagstaff to see the movie "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?"  This was a very enjoyable movie, especially with all the discussion and photos of Antarctica - they were all things we recognized because of all we have learned from Megan working at McMurdo.

Saturday, we went to the Munds Park Farmers Market - there was only one vendor with fresh veggies, about ten food trucks and fifteen vendors with arts and crafts for sale.  While it was a disappointment, I did walk there and back for exercise (9,100 steps, 4.5 miles).  Sunday the 1st, we went to the Flagstaff Farmers Market.  There was a nice xeriscape garden that we explored before going to the market.

There were dozens of food vendors.  We started with lattes and pastries which we consumed while sitting at the Flagstaff Library, then bought fresh corn, red potatoes, a purple onion, a green pepper, peaches and apples.  We were surprised to see a vendor with fresh salmon from Alaska.

In the park one block away, there was Art in the Park with close to a hundred vendors.

Then it was a quick run to Safeway, a visit to some homes that were on sale and back to our rental in Munds Park for a quiet Sunday afternoon.
