International Rose Test Garden, Portland

Today we visited the International Rose Test Garden, one part of Washington Park, a city park that is open to all and has not entrance cost (although we did park in area where there was a fee for parking).  If a picture is worth a thousand words, 25 pictures must be worth twenty five thousand words.  Even this long after the prime time for roses, the garden was amazing.

The variation is size, shape and color was amazing.  There are many thousands of roses over many acres - a real pleasure to visit.

We then drove to the Pearl District for lunch at Piazza Italia and had an excellent lunch.  We then drove downtown and walked to a craft shop and then on to a wine bar where Patty had Pinot Noir, where I sampled three wines and Ben sample eight wines.  On the way back, we stopped by a monument to teachers.

We then went to Powell's Book Store, apparently the largest independent book store in the USA, covering a whole city block with new and used books.  Ben got five books and I got two.

When we got back to Ben and Martha's apartment, I walked the dog and then got a phone call from the basement tenant at our Airbnb rental (she helps manage the rental for the landlord).  She wondered where we were, because it sounded like an animal running around in our apartment.  We told her to feel free to go check - it turns out a squirrel got in through the chimneyy and could not find his way back out.  She opened up doors and cleaned the place, and it appears that the squirrel is no longer here.  And so our day in Portland ends and we will head for the Amtrak station tomorrow noon for the ride to Seattle.
