Oregon had unseasonably hot weather when we arrived on Sunday. Fortunately, both the Airbnb house we rented and the car from Budget had air conditioning. Sunday, we went to the 31st Bite of Oregon - dozens of brewers, wineries, restaurants, food trucks and entertainers gather annually for a three day festival of food, beverage and festivities along the Willamette River in downtown Portland. We spend about four hours there before heading to our Airbnb rental. We were all tired from this, so we rested for a bit and then I ordered food from a local Thai restaurant, went and picked up Ben and Martha, some groceries and the Thai food. The four of us ate and drank at our rental, and then Ben and Martha walked the 1.5 miles back to their apartment while Patty and I crashed.
Monday morning, Shadow's cough had worsened and he woke Ben and Martha twice during the night. So at 7:00, I drove to Ben and Martha's place, and then Ben and I took Shadow to the veterinarian's office. Other than the cough, he checked out fine - the vet was surprised that Shadow was in a such good condition for his age. He gave us a prescription antibiotic and said to give Shadow a tablespoon of honey a couple times a day. We then went and picked up Patty and the breakfast food purchased Sunday, and went to Ben and Martha's apartment where we ate breakfast outside on their fourth floor community patio.
Our plan for the day was to head out for Multnomah Falls. It was another exceedingly hot day, eventually reaching 99 degrees. We arrived at the falls around noon and then hiked from the lodge first up to the lower falls and then up to the top of the 592 foot higher falls - this was about 1.25 miles with eleven switchbacks on the trail.
After reaching the top of the falls, we hiked back down and then drove back into Portland for a late lunch at Breakaway Brewery that opens at 3 and closes at 10ish. We had several different types of beer and great food for lunch.
On the way back to the car, we came across a Ben Ware sized bike - not a real bike, but the seat was about six feet from the ground, so Patty and I thought this would be great for Ben.
We ended up just taking it easy for the evening - after a day out hiking and with the heat, we were beat. Ben and Martha went back to their place and Patty and I just watched some Daily Show episodes from last week.
