Back in Phoenix and Julianne visits for a week

We returned from Grand Cayman on Saturday evening, Feb. 28.  Martha had a great week taking care of Mr. Shadow.  On Sunday, the three of us went for a hike on Shaw Butte.

Many blossoms were opening up, even this early in the spring (actually late winter).

In the afternoon, we visited the Phoenix Art Museum and saw Leonardo da Vinci's Codex and Andy Warhol's portrait display.  There was also an exhibit on clothing designed and made in America.

Martha returned to Portland on Monday March 2 and we spent the next couple of days reorganizing ourselves.  On Thursday March 4, Patty and I had lunch with Dick and Charlotte, two Canadians I met at Vaughan Town in 2014 - they have relatives here in AZ and visit periodically.  We had a nice visit at Christos Restaurant.

Julianne arrived on Friday March 6, in time to join our usuall Friday gathering, this time at Otro Restaurant.  On Sunday, Cathy had planned a 90th birthday party for her mom, Madeline, at the Irish Cultural Center.  We had never been there before and I was impressed with the center - we only saw the outside and the banquet hall, but I need to return and see the rest of it.

There was an amazing display of artwork in the banquet hall - all in the form of home made cloths and quilting.

Madeline is excited to be there

We took Julianne on a nice hike starting at Brown's Ranch trail head out to Cathedral Rock and back.

On Wednesday March 11, Julianne, Patty and I visited the Musical Instrument Museum in Scottsdale.  It is a great place to visit, with music and instruments from around the world, as well as sections on popular artists and mechanical music (player pianos, music boxes, etc.).

Since Megan and Jon were in Vanuatu, I had to take a photo of that exhibit
For our friends Kaye, Meghann and Joe and their work in Haiti

For my friends in Spain

This world map is on the floor and I took this photo from the second floor landing of the circular stairs.
On Thursday, the three of us went to Jerome to wander through the shops and have lunch at the Asylum.  I sat on a bench and ended up chatting with the local police chief for about 30 minutes, then visited the Jerome Historical Society museum.  Julianne and Patty visited the shops.

At the asylum for lunch, they seated us under a map of the wine regions of the Iberian Peninsula.

We had a great lunch, with excellent wine and superb desserts.

After lunch, I took a couple of photos, one looking out at the valley and one of the asylum.

When we returned to the condo that evening, we found a couple of the pool umbrellas broken by the high winds.  On Friday morning, I went to Costco and got two new ones, and Julianne helped me put them together.

On Friday evening, in celebration of St. Patrick's day, nine of us went to a concert at the Desert Botanical Garden.  The Celtic group Brazen Head were excellent.  Anne, Shawn, Meg, Jane, Cathy, Madeline, Julianne, Patty and I had a great evening, dining and drinking with great music.

Julianne left Saturday morning, March 14.  This let Patty and me to catch our breath before Megan arrived the next day on Sunday evening.
