Julianne Comes to Visit Part 2, Sunday to Wednesday, Feb. 4 - 7, 2018

On my early morning walk on Sunday, the eastern sky was on fire with the bright sun rising.

Later Sunday morning, Julianne and I walked to Steele Indian School Park.  I showed her many of the points of interest, including walking the circle of life garden.  We also saw a family that was taking photos of their beautiful daughter who was dressed to celebrate her QuinceaƱera.

Later, I walked to Basha's to buy the ingredients, and then Patty and Julianne made some spicy chicken wings and blue cheese dip.  Late Sunday afternoon we went to Anne and Shawn's home for a Super Bowl Party.  The sports fans sat inside and watched the game, while the rest of us sat outside on the patio.  We had good food with good friends for a great time together.

On my Monday morning walk, I was reminded of how Phoenix was built for using cars.  People like to stay in their cars, whether it is for fast food like Burger King or MacDonalds - but also for buying booze and even salads.

Monday morning, Julianne helped us shop for the floor tiles for the kitchen and laundry room.  We learned about rectified tiles and how the edge of the tile allows them to be closer together and use less grout.  We also decided we liked the tile they had used on this display and that is what we bought.

We then went to the Heard Museum where we had a delightful lunch before getting a tour.  After the tour, we went upstairs and visited the "Indian School Experience" exhibit.  We did not treat native Americans well - we forcibly took children from their homes and families, and put them in Indian Schools where they were treated like military cadets and worse.  We also visited the "Around the World" collection which had art from native peoples around the world.

On Tuesday I went to the DBG for my usual docent duties.  We had our monthly potluck where I brought some red skin potato salad and some of the Manchego cheese I brought back from Spain.  At lunch, among other wonderful decorations, Carolyn had three pink love bugs for anyone to take for children, grandchildren or great grandchildren; only one was taken, so Carolyn gave one to me and one to Al.  The love bug brightened Patty's day.  Patty and Julie explored the garden while I was busy with the docents.

Wednesday morning, the moon was still bright in the sky.

Wednesday morning at ten, a man from the tile installers came to measure our kitchen and laundry, and gave us an estimate for doing the floor and a date to install - the kitchen renovation moves forward.  We then visited the Audobon Center on Central Ave.  It is amazing to see how they had only four mesquite trees when they started in 2009 and to see the beautiful riparian area they now have, with pleasant trails through the grounds.  We also visited the Salt River Project on the other side of the river, where we hiked around the pond and out to the overlook.

Last Thursday, Jane had told us about the Barrio Cafe; since Julianne likes Mexican food, we decided to go there for a late lunch.  It was outstanding and deserves all the good ratings.  We will definitely be back.

Besides being a great restaurant, they also exhibit local artists' paintings - and some of those artists apparently painted the walls inside the restroom.

And then it was back to the condo for a quiet evening of Trevor Noah on the Daily Show, and Nova on PBS - all enjoyed with a little red wine and munchies.
