After Helen and Before Spain, Friday to Tuesday, Jan. 12 - 17, 2018

Friday we rolled up all the rugs and took them to McFarland's for cleaning - we had brought them here before.  They stated that the handwoven woolen rugs would last forever - these were the three rugs we had bought in Nepal which had been hand woven at the Tibetan refugee center in Pokhara.  The other rugs were okay, but the largest one may have problems with backing - that style tends to fall apart and may need repairs.

Then it was on to IKEA and starting the odyssey of redoing our kitchen.  We got enrolled in the IKEA Family program - it supposedly gets you discounts (I saw that included free coffee at the cafe in the store).  As we walked through the store I saw a display of how they organized a tiny home with only 400 square feet.  I sent photos to Megan because of her interest in tiny homes.

The facing, counter top and hardware have been selected and we have an appointment with an installer on the day after I return from Spain.  And we found what appears to be the right refrigerator.

Back home, we had a quiet Friday evening.  Saturday, after my morning walk, I went to Jane's house to fix her recliner.  One of the plastic lifts broke, so I brought two 26 inch long pieces of 4 by 4 wood with angle brackets.  We removed the plastic lifts and I installed the wooden ones, and all seems fine.

After a quiet Saturday afternoon, Patty and I walked to the French Grocery for dinner.  While we have had breakfast there many times, this was the first time for dinner.  We shared a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau, Patty has cassoulet with roast duck and I had scallops a la Martinique.  For dessert, we shared an apple tarte tatin.  A very nice Saturday dinner!!

Sunday was the Rock and Roll Marathon in Phoenix.  As in past years, it went near our condo.  In prior years, a band always was positioned nearby and we could hear it in the condo.  We also we walk out to the corner to watch the marathon because we often knew someone who was running.  But this year, no friends or relatives were running and there was no band - so it was a quiet Sunday.

Monday was Martin Luther King Day.  Our plan for the day was to watch the movie "The Post" with Meryl Streep as Katherine Graham and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee.  Anne and Shawn picked us up and we went to the AMC Esplanade Dine In Theater on Camelback Road.  It was a very good show and very timely presentation about freedom of the press and whether the Post should print the classified top secret Pentagon Papers which analyzed the history of American involvement in Vietnam.

Tuesday was my usual day at the Desert Botanical Garden, and Tuesday evening was the annual meeting for the Carlyle HOA.  And then it was time to finish packing for my next trip to Spain.
