Helen's last day in AZ, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018

For anyone who knows us, Helen and I were up early as usual.  We had coffee, fruit and an oatmeal raisin cookie for a light breakfast - it is always good to have a little food before going off to do things.  A little before 7:00, we drove over to Jane's condo, picked her up and then drove to the main kitchen of St. Vincent de Paul which produces some 4,300 meals every day for their six locations in Phoenix.  As Jane and I had done last Thursday, the three of us were volunteers for a two hour shift from 7:30 to 9:30.  Helen and I worked with 15 year old Nathan cutting up 200 pounds of potatoes to be used in soup, and then began cutting up 100 pounds of carrots.

Jane had developed a blister last week while cutting potatoes, so she worked with Nathan's mom - among other things they opened cans of applesauce and dumped them into large barrels for use in other dishes.

Then the three of us went out for brunch at Over Easy, a new restaurant on 24th St and Camelback -  very good food.

After bringing Jane home, Helen packed for her return home and then Helen, Patty and I went to the Desert Botanical Garden.  Helen wanted to see the many Jun Kaneko sculptures at the DBG for this season.  On this one, she said the blue dots matched her blue shirt.

Besides seeing many birds and trying to listen to their sounds (the bird display was not functioning), we explored the many changes made since Helen last visited the DBG, including this living sun dial.

On the way home, we stopped at a Whole Foods Market where Patty bought a variety of cheeses and pate and when home, we enjoyed them with wine while watching the Daily Show and Blue Bloods.  A little before 10:00, Patty bade Helen goodbye and safe travels, and I then drove Helen to the airport.  It has been a busy and fun filled week.  We always enjoy having Helen visit with us and this trip was no exception.
