A pleasant week in Flagstaff, Mon. to Thur., Sept. 10 - 13, 2018

Did I mention that there is a lot of wildlife in the subdivision where we live?  We learned that they don't allow fences on private property because that would impede the movement of wildlife.  As I noted in an earlier post, the first morning we were here we encountered a coyote as we went out for our morning walk (he was not interested in us) and then a group of several deer.  On Monday morning, Sept. 10, Patty took these two photos of the herd of elk across the street from our house.  She estimated there were some 20 - 25.  She read that this is the time of year when they breed.  Several other neighbors were out taking photos, but Patty kept her distance and these photos were taken by zooming out.

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, we decided to hike the Karen Cooper Trail.  It is another one of the FUTS (Flagstaff Urban Trail System) trails.  We started at the northern end, just north of the Museum of Northern Arizona.  It generally follows this section of the Rio de Flag river bed.  It has nice places to stop and rest, as well as signs educating the public.

We went about two miles in towards town and then turned around.  On our way back, we passed an area where numerous deer were grazing.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, we hiked the eastern half of the JWP Trail (John Wesley Powell) - but it was a paved trail that followed the road and was not very interesting.  After about 3/4 of a mile, we turned south on the Fisher Point Trail.  It was not paved and meandered through a very upscale neighborhood in the Pines Canyon Golf Course Community.

After about a half mile, we came to the end of the FUTS trail and entered the Coconino National Forest.

After about a mile, we came to the intersection with the Arizona Trail  - the 800 mile trail system that goes from the Arizona - Mexico border to the Arizona - Utah border.

We went about another half mile, then turned around and hiked the two and a half miles back to our car.  We went home, had lunch and a rest.  And then we went to watch "Operation Finale" at the local movie theater.  It is the story of how Israel's Mossad captured Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1960 and brought him back to Israel where he as convicted of complicity in the murder of six million Jews in WWII.
