Exploring the local area and the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, Sept. 5 - 7, 2018

We have continued to explore the local area.  Wednesday, we walked on streets through different neighborhoods.  We learned that there is a Wyndham Resort with rentals of condos/apartments.  Here is some info from their website:

At Wyndham Flagstaff Resort, these spacious one- and two-bedroom resort suites comfortably sleep four to six guests and range from 460 to 963 square feet. Suites feature one king bed in the master bedroom, two twin beds in the guest room and a sleeper sofa in the living area. Whether you're traveling with extended family or a smaller party, you will appreciate the privacy of separate bedrooms, the economy of a fully equipped private kitchen, and the convenience of a washer/dryer in each suite. Plus, a whirlpool tub, full dining room, and TVs throughout are comforts you just won't find in an average hotel room. Enjoy a hot cup of cocoa by the fireplace or take in the fresh air and mountainside scenery from the comfort of your own private balcony in this relaxing, vacation destination home.

We passed the Wyndham Resort offices on our way to Duck Lake.  From the map, it looked like an interesting place to hike to and visit.  As we approached the lake, we could see a nice path around the lake, benches and picnic tables.  But - you have to have a membership to even walk on the trail, and as the sign advises, you have to be prepared to present your membership.

Across the street from the lake, there was a field of wildflowers and Elden Mountain in the distance.

When grocery shopping at Fry's, I found some nice cut flowers with pink flamingos.

On Friday, we walked to Foxglenn Park, about 3/4 of a mile from our rental.  Our plan was to explore the Foxglenn Trail which is part of FUTS - Flagstaff Urban Trail System.

The trail goes behind the local elementary school and one class was out exploring the trail as we started out.

The Fox Glen Trail is relatively flat and has beautiful wild flowers on both sides.

It was a sunny day and very warm, so we left the main trail and headed off through the woods.

The trail led to an old road that we followed.

When that road went through the woods, it was cool and pleasant.

As we reconnected with the Fox Glen Trail, we came across the Gunnison Prairie Dog Village.  Gunnison prairie dogs are a variety of prairie dogs that live here in the mountains.  The village was identified and mapped in 1982 but does not seem to have had much care and tending since then.

While we saw a few holes and hills, we did not see much evidence of the prairie dogs - we wondered if it was because of predators or too much incursion by humans.

FUTS has different sections of the various trails adopted by various groups who volunteer as Trail Stewards.

After the bright sunshine earlier on our hike, it began to cloud over and we even had a few drops of rain - it all made for a beautiful sky.

We hope to explore more of the 45 plus miles of Flagstaff's Urban Trails.
