Third Build Day With Fuller Center, Las Peñitas, Nicaragua, Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017

Wednesday was a bit hotter and with more sunshine, especially in the afternoon.  At our house, the local workers added rebar frames to the top of the walls to connect to the rebar in the existing walls.

I took a walk over to the other house.  On the corner, there was this interesting juxtaposition of a saddled horse outside the local internet cafe.

Here is a short video and a photo of the progress at the other house.

Back at our house, the large red bricks were being added to the tops of the wall.  I believe the idea is that high ceilings make the house cooler and more comfortable to be in.

Here is another video of the progress at the other house.  Volunteers go back and forth between the two houses, and depending on what work is being done, end up working on both houses.

As the day progressed at our house, the front wall was raised three full bricks.

Sand was sifted.

Mortar was mixed.

 Rebar was shaped into forms.

Rebar was cut to be used in the forms.

And work was begun on one of the side walls.

Just before dinner, there was another beautiful sunset.

After dinner, twelve of us took a bus into Leon where we visited a small museum that Santos (our translator) and his family have created a museum to this father who was one of the leaders of the guerilla movement that fought the Somoza regime for some 30 - 40 years.

After the tour, we were given the choice of returning to our hotel or continuing on as planned to a jazz performance.  There were several people who were considering returning to Las Peñitas with Alberto, but I was the only one to do so.  The other eleven volunteers went to the jazz show and told me they enjoyed the performance.
