Sunday morning, Helen and I (the early birds in the group) went out for an early morning walk and went to Saint Honore, a favorite boulangerie for coffee and pastry, and to bring home an assortment of goodies for everyone else to enjoy. Later, Helen, Megan, Patty and I visited Portland's International Rose Test Garden. Besides all the mess caused by construction, it was a day when they had an event to judge the roses and to recognize volunteers - so it was even more crowded than usual. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the tens of thousands of roses that were in bloom. After the roses, we then walked to Portland's Holocaust Memorial - a somber reminder of how nationalism and discrimination can cause so much death and destruction.
On Monday, Helen, Megan, Patty and I went to Silver Falls State Park. Helen gamely hiked in and down to see three of the falls from the North parking area. I took a couple of action shots as the three of them held back this tree sliding down the hill (sorry about the blurry photos).
We then went to the South parking area which includes the historic area of buildings built by the CCC during the Depression Era. It had been sprinkling earlier, but now it was raining, so we went to the lodge for a lunch of hot soup and shared panini.
Everyone was tired, so we hopped in the car for the 90 minute drive home. Not surprisingly, the only person to stay awake all the way home was the driver, Sherpa Tom.
Monday evening, we brought Helen to the airport and bade her farewell and safe travels back to Massachusetts.
