Lava Beds Visitor Center and Lava Butte, Monday June 5, 2017

After stopping for groceries and gas in Bend, we headed south townds our hotel in La Pine, Oregon.  I had seen some information online about the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and thought we should stop at the Lava Beds Visitor Center, as it was right off US 97 as we headed south.  I had not heard of it before this trip, and we were looking to visit Crater Lake National Park - so this was a very unexpected and pleasant place to visit.  The website said that there was a shuttle to top of Lava Butte with the last one at 4:00 p.m. - however, we were in luck, as the shuttle doesn't start until after public schools are on vacation, so we could drive to the top.  There is a narrow round that winds around the cinder cone and after about a half mile, we were at the parking lot near the top.  It is easy to see that a cinder cone was created and to see all the lava around the cone.  There is also a look out tower that the US Forest Service uses to watch for wildfires as well as an area for visitors to learn about the Lava Butte and the cinder cone.

There is a short trail that goes around the top of what remains of the cinder cone.

Here is a map that shows both the road up to the top of Lava Butte as well as the trail.

Here is a short video I took showing the cinder cone and the loop trail that goes around the top of the cinder cone.
