We drove the 13 miles west from Paulina Falls back out to US 97, then north for a mile on 97, then east for about five miles to the day use area of the park. It is a very nice picnic area and beach on the Deschutes River. It was very peaceful, as we were the only ones there.
After eating our picnic lunch, we set out on Cougar Woods Trail, following along the river towards the Big Tree. Along the way, we passed sensitive habits and had great views of the river.
We arrived at the parking lot and headed out on the Big Tree Loop Trail and finally reached the Ponderosa Pine that is the pride of the park, some 500 years old and over 100 feet tall.
We finished the Big Tree Loop Trail, ending up back at the parking lot, then continued on to the rest of the Cougar Woods Trail back to where our car was. After a four plus miles of hiking, we enjoyed a drink and then headed off to the Lava Cast Forest.
