Camp Tule Lake, Tuesday, August 22, 2017

On my early morning walk, there was still a lot of smoke in the air - those forest fires are still burning.

And even though it is still very dry, there are still wildflowers.

The plan for Tuesday was to drive to Lava Beds National Monument and explore.   What I did not realize was that we went by Camp Tule Lake.  Unfortunately for us, it is only open for tours on Saturdays.   From 1935 - 1942, the camp was used by the Civilian Conservation Corp to house the men who built much of the infrastructure for Lava Beds National Monument.  In 1942 and 1943, it housed Americans of Japanese descent - part of the 120,000 Americans wrongly interred.  In 1944 - 1945, it housed German and Italian prisoners of war.

This is one of two sites that are still preserved with the federal lands in and around Lava Beds National Monument.
