After visiting Lava Beds National Monument, we headed north. Immediately adjacent to the monument is the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge and then immediately north of that is the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. They are two of the six refuges in the Klamath Basin. We stopped at the visitor center, but it had closed at 4:00. We decided to hike the Marsh Trail to learn about the marsh they are trying to recreate in what had been the wetlands along the shores of Tule Lake before it had been drained in the early 1900s. We saw long billed curlews, herons, many kinds of ducks and geese, as well as many deer, including some up close.
