Preparing for travel and on to White City, OR, Saturday and Sunday, August 19/20 2017

We had more things than I wanted to have in the car for the long ride to Phoenix.  So Saturday morning was spent packing seven boxes in a way that would allow safe mailing from Portland to Phoenix.  This meant a trip to the local UHaul dealer for boxes and tape, and then a trip to the Post Office - it was worth the time, energy and money to make the load in our car lighter.  Fully loaded, I can still easily see over everything and out the back window.

A couple of weeks ago, Ben and Martha bought a used tandem bike.  They brought it to a local bike shop for repairs and upgrades, and Saturday afternoon, Ben went and retrieved it.  Once home, he made adjustments so that it fit properly for Ben on the front and Martha on the rear - and then they went out for the first ride on the bike after repairs.

And here they are as they return from the short test ride.

Sunday morning, Ben was loading up the saddlebags and trailer, as they were planning to bike to Salem, OR, to watch the eclipse.  Patty and I put the last of our things in the car and left around 8:30.

After an hour, we stopped and got coffee.  And then about 90 minutes later, we stopped at a rest area that had a tribute to those who fought in World War II.

Before we left Portland, I had bought salads and apples for our lunch - that allowed us to have a picnic lunch in Wolf Creek, OR, at Wolf Creek County Park, just off I-5.

I explored some of the trails and campsites around the park.

At one of the campsites, it appeared unoccupied - but there were items left on the table, including a bible with a name tag.

We continued on and arrived at our hotel in White City, OR.  Outside the building, there were multiple signs like this.

Among other things, the registration form had me acknowledge that there was a $200 penalty for smoking in the room.  And just to make sure, on the inside of the door, there was this sign.

We must be fated to have high temps and smoke from forest fires - we could see and smell smoke from the forest fires for the last half of our trip and temps were forecast to be in the upper 90s.  Our original plan was to visit Crater Lake National Park on Monday - we will have to see what it is like.  Here is the warning on their website:

Multiple Trails Temporarily Closed Due to Spruce Lake and Blanket Creek Fires

Alert 1 , Severity ,danger ,,Multiple Trails Temporarily Closed Due to Spruce Lake and Blanket Creek FiresMultiple trails on the west and south sides of the park are closed, including portions of the Pacific Crest Trail. All park entrances and facilities remain open, including Rim Village.

Sunday night, we had a quiet evening at the hotel - we used the microwave in our room to have soup and bread for dinner.
