Off to Cozumel for a week of Scuba Diving with Burlington's Waterfront Dive Center

On Friday, March 18, our friend Jane drove with us to the airport and then took our car home for the week.  We flew to Houston and stayed Friday night at the Marriott Hotel at IAH - it can be reached by the airport underground train, so it is very convenient.  We had dinner at the hotel pub and then Saturday morning took the morning flight to Cozumel.  This was the start of spring break, so the Cozumel airport was really busy with full arriving flights - this made our trek through immigration to be very slow.

Once through immigration and customs, we took our luggage and got a van to Scuba Club Cozumel for our week of diving.  The other 17 people from Burlington had arrived about 30 minutes before us.  We had lunch, did the scuba paperwork and got weights.  We got into our room, then went for an afternoon shore dive to check out all our gear and to make sure we had the right amount of weights.  After the dive and before dinner, I went for a walk and was able to take this nice shot of the setting sun before it was hidden behind the clouds.

On Sunday morning, we went out on our first day of two drift dives.  The boat rides were long and both dives were nearly an hour, so the total time out was nearly five hours.  We got back, had lunch and then took naps, and also had a quiet evening Sunday.  The weather was starting to deteriorate and then as suspected, Monday all boat trips and dives were cancelled.  So we spent the day exploring the town of San Miguel and surrounding environs on the island of Cozumel.

At the Scuba Club Cozumel resort, they had this funny sign reminding us of Hitchcock's famous movie "The Birds."

While having lunch at the resort's cafe, we sat outside on the porch - and we saw a friendly crab on the wall.

When walking downtown San Miguel, we saw just how hard the waves were crashing - it was easy to see why diving was cancelled.

On a later walk, I found this fun sign that reminded me of my time in Madrid drinking mojitos with Terry.

Patty and I came across the old diving sculpture in the center of the downtown waterfront - we confirmed with Megan that it had been here when Megan and I were diving in Cozumel in 2000.  Most of the rest of the waterfront and downtown San Miguel as well as the old cruise ship and new cruise ship dock had been rebuilt or built new since our trip in 2000.

And here is a shot of the old cruise ship dock, with two cruise ships and a ferry tied up.
