While we walked around some last night after arriving in Revelstoke, I went out this morning to explore further. At the end of MacKenzie Street, they have these wonderful sculptures of bears, one with a bear cub. It had rained during the night, so the skies were still cloudy and misty partially blocking the view of the mountains in the distance, especially in the first photo looking east.
Looking north on MacKenzie, you can see all the downtown revitalization efforts they have made. From what I understand, Revelstoke had been an industrial (lumber, mining, farming) town until about five or seven years ago when they started to focus on tourism year round (instead of just skiing during the winter). The results have been very good. For those who know Stowe, VT, Banff is Stowe on Steroids and Revelstoke, if it maintains momentum, will be like Stowe in a few years.
Mountains in every direction.
I took these photos from in front of the Mountain View School. I later learned that this is looking upstream on the Columbia River at the railroad bridge.
In the downtown historical area, they have posted information about many of the buildings.
And in some cases, added murals.
Back at the hotel, I found they have a nice open work area, with fast internet and even a printer. I was able to get enough work done today so that one of my classes is completely ready and I started working on a second (only five more classes to finish getting ready).
Breakfast is included at the Regent Hotel, so we had a nice breakfast together to start our day in Revelstoke.
