Friday night we stayed at the La Quinta Inn and Suites in Spokane Valley. I specifically chose this to be away from the downtown area and away from the highway. It was about a mile and a half north of I-90. What I did not know was that the hotel is in the Spokane Business & Industrial Park. It was a nice quiet place but not very picturesque and not many restaurants nearby except for McDonalds and a pizza joint.
We went at a leisurely pace, in part because of construction which slowed the traffic for many miles. We got off I-90 in St. Regis, MT, to head north to Whitefish. We stopped and explored one of the many tourist stores there. Patty got a huckleberry milkshake and I had a latte with caramel waffle cookies.
As we passed Flathead Lake, there were signs for an overlook and viewpoint, so we pulled in. The signs must be old, as the trees have grown up around the overlook blocking the view of the lake. And there were signs all around the parking area - no trespassing private property - so you could not even attempt to get a better view. Such is life.
We arrived late afternoon at Bow Mountain Lodge in Whitefish and unloaded all our gear into our king suite. This is a pleasant small hotel back from the highway. We took a dip in the pool to cool off. And then we headed out to dinner at the Stillwater Fish Restaurant. We shared some stick shaped hush puppies and calamari with thai curry sauce for an appetizer. I had pretzel crusted trout from Idaho on sauteed spinach with sweet potatoes and bacon. Patty had scallops with green beans and polenta with sprouts.
A nice day of travel!
