Cape Disappointment State Park, Coast Guard Station and Light House, Oct. 25, 2016

Cape Disappointment State Park has several hundred campsites, cabins and yurts and lies between the two lighthouses.  As we looked north, we could see the North Head lighthouse and the beautiful beach.

We also came across a variety of colorful wild mushrooms, with signs warning that it is a crime to pick them.

When then drove to the Cape Disappointment Coast Guard Station.  It is an active base of operations, including manning the observation station by the light house.  There are two lighthouses, less than two miles apart - this one is more for the entrance to the Columbia River, while the one at North Head was for shipping coming south along the coast from Alaska, Canada and Washington.

There is a trail that takes you around the Coast Guard base and past this beautiful little inlet on the ocean side of the lighthouse.

As you get to the back gate of the Coast Guard base, there is a nice concrete road up the hill to the lighthouse.

As I came back down from the lighthouse, I was able to get a few more photos of the Coast Guard base.

We then took a leisurely drive back home but stayed on the Washington side of the river for about two hours to reach I-5, and then south for an hour back to Portland.
