Steam Donkey Trail, Oct. 23, 2016

On Sunday morning, we set out Fort Stevens, where we had a reservation for a cabin for two nights.  Once again, serendipity brought us to the Sunset Springs rest area on Oregon Route 26 - we had passed it before, but never really noticed it because it is a couple hundred yards off the highway and blocked from view by trees.  Patty had been looking online while I was driving to see if there was anything to stop and do on our route, as check in time at Fort Stevens is 4:00 p.m. She found a write up for the Steam Donkey Trail.  And the trail starts at this rest area, which marks the history of the Tillamook Burn, the large series of forest fires in the 1930s and 40s.

The trail starts by crossing the South Fork of Rock Creek.

After about a quarter of a mile, you come to the exhibit on the Steam Donkey, and how man and machine worked to harvest lumber in the 1920s.

There were many large stumps from old growth trees that were felled in the 1920s and before.

And many of the trees were beautifully covered with moss.

After this short hike of just under a mile, we returned to our car and continued on towards Fort Stevens.
